Are You Prepared For An Emergency?

Monday, March 01, 2010

When disaster strikes and wipes out your home, food and power, how will you survive?

Ask yourself - "Could I help myself and the ones i love in the event of an emergency?" if your answer is no then read on, because what you're about to discover could one day quite literally - SAVE YOUR LIFE.

It seems like every time we turn on the news these days we hear about another life threatening emergency - floods, road accidents, plane crashes - But rarely do we stop to think, "that could've been me".

Because for the most part of your life, save for a few hard bumps and bruises, you have been living a relatively risk free life.

So why bother worrying over an emergency that may never happen? Provided you stay in your 'comfort zone' of work, television, family and weekends - everything should be okay...right?

Wrong! Because as anyone who has experienced a real emergency will tell you, they either wish they acted on the early warning signals - or worse...

THEY NEVER SAW IT COMING.

Very few are prepared when an emergency strikes, it comes swiftly and without warning.

In fact this year in Australia alone we have seen some of the largest disasters in our history.

Queensland Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said the flood crisis in South East Queensland in May 2009 was the worst since 1974, an event which happened to be one of the worst recorded floodings in Australia to date. And without question the Victorian Bushfires in February 2009 was one of the worst ever seen or experienced in Australia or the World.

There is no doubt that many who suffered during these events suddenly realized the importance of being prepared.

Sadly however, many were not prepared for these catastrophic events, because just like you they had foolishly thought - "that will never happen to me".

Forewarned is forearmed - so why take the risk when you have the opportunity to get prepared right now.

Things can be replaced. People cannot.

Emergency Services Can Only Do So Much

If you are counting on the state/ federal emergency services, S.E.S, military or Red Cross to bail you out - think again.

I do not doubt the intentions or capabilities of these services but like any other service - the government emergency services can only go so far.

There is only so many human resources, food rations, shelter, supplies and medical aid to go around during an emergency before it's stretched to it's fullest capacity. At which point you are either left to fend for yourself or, if we are so fortunate, the government services will gain assistance from abroad.

During the Victorian bushfires the state received significant international support from the United States, Canada and New Zealand. These brave men and women helped diligently to fight the relentless bushfires and support those in need, for which we owe them our gratitude.

Without them who knows how much worse the disaster could've gone.

Which makes you wonder - what if they had not come at all?

If the government services are asking for assistance, do you really think they have all the resources they need to help everyone?

There is a very good reason we have the opportunity to learn first aid, and the same can be said for survival kits. In fact it is recommended by emergency services we have a first aid and survival kit available to us at all times.

Why? Because in order for them to help us we must first help ourselves.

By accepting that our own safety is our own responsibility we are in a better position to survive any emergency.

This attitude of 'total self reliance' will also help the emergency services get on with the task of saving lives and restoring normality - all because you did the right thing to prepare for an emergency, before it becomes an emergency.

So how can you help yourself and the ones you love to safely overcome an emergency event?

Hope for the best, Prepare for the worst

Being prepared for an emergency does not remove you from risk, but it will certainly improve your chances of survival. Indeed you may live without ever experiencing an emergency in your life, and we hope you are so fortunate, but it is always better to be prepared for the worst.

Disasters often strike without warning, others occur by the nature of the weather, location or circumstances.

Warning signs or not, you must be prepared for any emergency that may be thrown your way. If you do not, as history and recent events have shown, you put yourself and those you love at imminent risk.

How To Get Prepared For An Emergency

You must prepare for an emergency before the emergency occurs, if you wait until it happens it is too late.

The people who successfully survive an emergency are those that have a plan, the resources, the knowledge and more importantly the will to survive such circumstances.

Now is your opportunity to get prepared - take it.
